Our School Tour

On the third of June, my class and I went on our school tour.We had to be up at the school at about 8:20am because we were leaving at half past eight. For our school tour we went to a place called Sliabh na Caillighe. Our teacher Ms.Keogh had rented a bus for us to keep our stuff on the bus during the day. After everyone was settled on the bus, we set off on our journey to Sliabh na Caillighe which is in Co.Meath.Our first stop was at a small shop in Drumbaragh. We were allowed to buy sweets we also were able to have a toilet break! Our next stop was at Sliabh na Caillighe which means hill of the witch. It is a passage tomb that is just like Newgrange and it was built aroud the same time as Newgrange[actually before it!].It is kind of small and we were only able to fit 5 or 6 people into the tomb. While we were inside, the people on the outside were listening to stories about Sliabh na Caillighe and its history. Our next stop was at Ms.Keogh's mam's house.Mrs.Keogh gave us ice cream, wafers and penguin bars which was very kind of her. While we were there we played football, rugby or just sat around and talked. Our next and final stop was at Woodfield Open Farm. While we were there, we were allowed to pet and hold some animals.Dominic who was the man who owned the farm let us hold all of the puppies. We saw goats, horses, donkeys and pigs.On the way home we saw the Tower of Lloyd which is a folly that was built during the famine. We arrived back at the school at about 4:00pm. It was a really fun day.

1916: The Leaders

There were lots of leaders in the 1916 Rising. The most famous were Pádraig Pearse,Tom Clarke,Joseph Plunkett,Eamonn Ceannt,Seán MacDiarmada and James Connolly.Tom Clarke was a tobacconist and had the honour of signing the proclamation first.Pádraig Pearse had a squint in his eye and always stood sideways in a photo.Eamonn Ceannt was born in Ballymoe moved to Dublin when he was 10 years old.Joseph Plunkett was a great poet and a scholar and got married just hours before his execution.James Connolly was born in Scotland and left school at the age of 11.Seán MacDiarmada was stricken with polio and was forced to walk with a cane and became manager of a newspaper called"Irish Freedom".

Kilmainham Jail

My class and I are going to see Kilmainham Jail on the 15th of June so we thought we might tell you a bit about it.

Kilmainham Jail was bulit in 1769,Kilmainham Jail is also know as Kilmainham Gaol.Kilmainham Jail has a unique part in Irish History, and was where, for more than 100 years, those who fought against the English occupatoin of Ireland were imprisoned and where many of them died.

A PLACE OF DEATH

In 1803,Robert Emmet, leader of an ill-fated rebellion against the English, was imprisoned in Kilmainham before being taken to Thomas St. where he was hung and beheaded. The block where he was beheaded is in an exhibit in the jail.Emmet's famous speech before his execution was:"When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth then and not until then, let my epitaph by written".The most famous,or infamous, executions of all in Kilmainham were those of the 14 of the leaders of the failed 1916 Easter Rising. These took place in May 1916 between the 3rd and the 12th in the early hours of the morning in the Stonebreaker's Yard.Among them was the leader of the Rising Pádraig Pearce and his brother.Willy Pearce,William James Connolly,Eamon Ceannt and Seán McDermott were also executed.Stark black crosses now mark the places where these deaths occurred. That's all the information we know now but wait until we get back and we will have more information for you.But the last thing that I want to say is that my great grandad was in Kilmainham Jail some of you may think "her grandad is a criminal" but I couldn't be more proud of anyone. He was fighting during the Rising and I am so proud of him.He was put in  Kilmainham in 1922 and was released in 1924.He had 2 horrible years in there but he always knew he would be welcomed home by his brother and his Mam and Dad.

Christopher and Daniel - Our Hurling Legends

We started our trials around Janurary. We really wanted to make the trials for the hurling team.We heard back from a boy in Miss Lafferty's class that our training sessions would be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We were so happy that we made the team it was a great privilege to represent the school - such an honour. Our first match was coming  up, it was just a friendly to kick-start the season.Unfortunately we lost but we all played a stormer. We didn't lose by much but it was only a friendly so it didn't really matter. So, it was a week after our first match and we were playing the same team as we played the last time; we didn't lose by much. Our next match was a great match too we didn't lose by much in that match but started slacking. Our next match was against Scoil Mhuire both teams had a lot of players so we could split our teams in to two
teams.I played two more matches.I think we lost the first one but we hammered the last team by loads they looked alright but they were terrible.

Our Class

I have known my class           Since I was  five,                                                                                                                                        We have all grown up together.
Through the ups and downs
The smiles the frowns,
We have stormed many a weather.

Our class is unique,
We each have different talents.
In athletics and academics,
We have a perfect balance.

Our class is a happy one,
I am so glad that it's mine.
We are all good friends,
And get along just fine.

We only have one more year,
That we will be a class.
So let's make the most of it,
And try and make it last.

At the end of February there were comogie trials. Our coaches are Ms. McIntyre,Ms.Murray and Anne.    Every Tuesday and Friday we train for matches. Our first match was a challenge match and we unfortunately lost.As the season progessed, we started to win our matches. We worked really, really hard in training to be the best that we could be.We were so lucky to get into the quarter finals. On the 3rd of May, we played against Mother of Divine Grace. We had lots of support from teachers to parents and friends and the one and only Mr.Creaner.The overall score was 13-3 to 1-0. On the 11th of May, we have a match in preparation for our semi -final. If we win the semi-final, we will get to play in Croke Park for the final. We are going to work to the best of our ability to win our semi-final.Thanks for all the support.

Our Cake Sale

We decided to have a cake sale, to raise money for charities that you will learn about further on in our blog.

We wrote letters to managers of shops to ask them if they could donate some of their items for our raffle and jumble sale. Lots of shops gave us items like vouchers, bath items, toys and lots more.

On the day of the cake sale we were all excited. In the morning, we put out our cakes and put up posters that said how much the items or cakes were. We had a chocolate fountain, 47 raffle prizes, a popcorn machine and lots more. 6 classes came to our cake sale and 2 other classes had a cake sale on the same day as ours to raise money for charity.

At the end of the day, all the cakes were sold and we were all so tired. On the next day we spent a lot of time counting money. We raised €2,068.28 altogether.

We all really enjoyed our very first cake sale. It was a great experience and we learned a lot from it. We would really like to do it again.

                                                                  Hope you enjoyed this blog!!!!!!

Our Work in Haiti.

The Haven Foundation is run by a man named Leslie Buckley. The Haven Foundation go to very poor countries to build houses, churches, shops and even community centres. Ms.Keogh's sister Rosemary went over to Haiti for a 'Build It Week' since all of the people's houses or shelters were destroyed during the earthquake last year. Rosie had to raise over €6,000.On the 'Build It Week',there were all different kinds of people there like;brick layers, carpenters, painters and the people who decorated the houses. They all played their parts and everything worked out and was successfully completed. We raised €800 for Haiti (and gave €1,268 to Operation Smile since Haven only needed 800 euro). We are very proud of what we achieved;80 houses were built that week in April,80 families' lives have changed.

Operation Smile

Our class had a big cake sale and we raised around €1,268  for Operation Smile.A lady from Operation Smile called Mrs.Earley came to visit our class. She gave us our cheque and we got a photograph with the cheque and Mrs.Earley.We then wrote letters to Mrs.Earley.

We wanted all our letters to go up on the website but unfortunately she could only pick one(she is deciding at the moment which letter to put on the website). We paid for six children to have operations on their cleft palates(you see, having a cleft palate means that you can't eat food properly because you have a problem with your palate and it's a very hard thing to deal with so it feels so good to help someone like this).

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Our class did plays 'as Gaeilge'  for Seachtain na Gaeilge. We performed and recorded over seven plays. We were put into groups to do separate plays. We were given our lines in September so we could practise our parts for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

We had a lot of props for our plays such as;horses, boats, money bags, beds, cakes, eggs, umbrellas and bagels. We thought that it would be a lot more fun than reading and learning them. There were characters like a king,a guard, children and teachers. We spent over a week practising and recording our plays. We spent about a day on each play.We all thought it was a fun way to learn Gaeilge. It was very hard learning our lines because they were in Irish.

We entered the Seachtain na Gaeilge Irish competition. It took 2 weeks to finish our plays for Seachtain na Gaeilge.About four and a half weeks later ,we received certificates from Conradh na Gaeilge congratulating us on our plays. We learnt the words in a fun way, not like just reading and learning them we acted them out when we knew our 'script'!.After we recorded our stories, Ms.Keogh  uploaded the videos on to the laptop. We watched them on the interactive whiteboard and really enjoyed them.It was fun and I hope we do it again.

Our Visit to Newgrange

Our class went to Newgrange on the 8th of April. First we went to the Visitor Centre. We saw many models and pictures of Newgrange. After visting the Vistor Centre, we took a bus to Newgrange. We entered Newgrange and it was very cold.We found out lots of interesting facts about Newgrange. We went back to the Visitor Centre and had our lunch. The tour guide said we were the best class she had ever met.We arrived back at school feeling very happy.

What Newgrange is;

Newgrange is a passage tomb and a spiritual temple. The stone - age people built Newgrange and decorated it with quartz.Newgrange is over 5,000 years old.It is older than the pyramids of ancient Egypt and Stonehenge.

Before our Visit....

A boy in our class named Ian typed some questions that all the Class wanted to ask the manager (Clare Tuffy). All of us wanted to meet Clare Tuffy, and we did.

We even made our own Newgrange models.Among other things,we used tennis balls, bowls, papier maché,clay, rocks, oranges, towels, wood, bricks, cows, cardboard and even cement! We really enjoyed the trip and learnt a lot of interesting facts.

Our Special Letter

A girl in our class named Nicole went to see the President. She told us a lot about her.We learned about her in our History book.We decided to write her a letter to see if we could visit her.We put a lot of effort into our letters. It took us a while but it was worth it.We were hoping to get a letter back.We got a letter back from President McAleese. In the letter we got a DVD and a signed picture of President McAleese. We tried to watch the DVD but it was in Irish so it was a bit too hard to follow. So my teacher called Áras an Uachtaráin and asked for another one of the DVDs.We watched the DVD the day we got it and wrote down some interesting facts. That night we wrote an essay about Mary McAleese,it was fun. Here are a few facts about Mary McAleese.Mary McAleese was born in 1951 in the Ardoyne area of Belfast. Before becoming President of Ireland she was a professor in Trinity Colleage Dublin.Mary McAleese held the same position as Mary Robinson. She also worked as a journalist and presented programmes on RTÉ.

Our class play was called The Great Yes! We only had one week to rehearse it so it took a lot of effort.
When we first rehearsed the play it was too short so we had to insert some scenes . The inserted scenes were a scene about the importance of having camel insurance, the second was about the Kings' wives with their gifts and our third new scene which we wrote was based on the cast sitting around Baby Jesus. The costumes were hard to figure out . The hardest props to make were the innkeepers' houses and the stable. It was hard to learn our lines in just one week. We had to move the whole classroom around to rehearse. We were very excited when the first class came in. We had performed for 4 or 5 classes and then it was time for our parents  to witness our amazing play!

We were very excited when our parents came in.At the start, there were only about 7 or 8 parents but about 5 mins later lots of them came in in time for the play. We were half way through the play when our new idea about the camel insurance came- it was great ;our parents loved it. When the play was over everyone cheered. We knew right then we had done an amazing job. Thank you for reading about our nativity play.
